Today, I had the privilege of experiencing a new side of rescue—something I’ve never done before despite my decade of working with stray animals. I’ve always been the one to pick up strays, to give them a second chance at life, but today, for the first time, I went street feeding with a good friend who’s been doing it for a long time. As we drove through the streets, ready to provide food for those in need, I was filled with both excitement and a sense of deep empathy, knowing we were about to meet those who were still struggling, surviving on their own.
We had just started our route when we came across him—the very first dog we encountered on our journey. A little puppy, no older than a few months, lying near the popular dumping site, abandoned with nothing but his bed and water bowl. The moment I laid eyes on him, my heart shattered. I’ve rescued many animals over the years, but seeing a young pup like him, so lost and vulnerable, was different. His eyes looked up at us, so full of confusion and fear, as if he couldn’t understand why he was left in such an unfamiliar place. How could someone just dump him like this?
There’s no way of knowing why his previous owner decided to abandon him. Maybe they didn’t have the means to care for him, or perhaps they just didn’t care at all. Either way, it didn’t matter now. What mattered was that this little one had a chance. He was in front of us, still breathing, still so young, and in desperate need of help. That was all that mattered.
I’m so incredibly grateful to @Pippy’s Pals for saying, “Yes, let’s take him.” Without hesitation, we made the decision to save this puppy’s life. We couldn’t let him suffer on the streets, especially when he was so unaware of how to survive on his own. The streets can be unforgiving, and for a pup like him, every day would have been a battle—a battle that he wasn’t prepared for. The future could have been bleak if we hadn’t stepped in.
We brought him to safety, and I immediately felt a weight lift off my shoulders. This little one was now safe, away from the dangers of the streets. I could already picture the life he deserved—a life full of love, comfort, and security. From here on out, we’ll make sure he gets the care he needs. He will be fostered with so much love and attention, and once he’s fully vetted, neutered, and ready for adoption, he’ll have a family that will cherish him forever.
I can’t help but feel emotional every time I think about what could have happened if we hadn’t been there for him. His little paws, so soft and tiny, had no business being on the rough streets alone. But thanks to the kindness of people who care, he now has a fighting chance—a chance to become a beloved pet and companion, something every dog deserves.
The hardest part of this journey is the unknown—why was he abandoned? What happened to the life he could have had? We’ll never know the answers to those questions, but what we do know is that he’s safe now. And from this moment on, his life is going to be full of nothing but love and happiness.
This is what rescue is all about—giving animals who have been forgotten a chance at life. Every pup, every kitten, every stray deserves to be seen, to be loved, and to know what it’s like to feel safe. I’m grateful for this experience today and for the opportunity to help make a difference in the life of a dog who so desperately needed it. He’s going to have a bright future, and I’m honored to be part of his journey. 🥹
