The Dachshund originated in Germany several centuries ago. They were bred to hunt badgers, rabbits, and other burrowing animals due to their long, narrow bodies that allowed them to enter burrows. It was like a deadly slinky if you were a ground creature.
The Dachshund was developed through selective breeding of various dog breeds, including hounds and terriers, to create a dog with a keen sense of smell, stamina, and the ability to dig into burrows to hunt prey. A mutation along the way gave them the short legs!
Their name translates to “badger dog” in German, highlighting their original purpose but today they are known for their playful and curious nature, making them great companions for families and individuals alike.
They are also small in size, which makes them suitable for apartment living. Their short coats require minimal grooming. Some cons – that long and low body.
Their elongated spines make them prone to back problems, especially if they are overweight or not handled properly. They can also be willful, which may require patience in training.
