When I say, ‘I want to save all the old and unwanted dogs from the shelter

I still remember that day as if it were yesterday. I looked into the eyes of those older dogs—eyes that were sad, but full of hope. For many years, I volunteered at local animal shelters, and what hurt me the most was seeing the elderly dogs left behind, no one wanting them. These dogs had once had families, homes, and now they were alone, abandoned, and not given a second thought.

One day, I told my friends, “I want to save all the old and unwanted dogs from the shelter.” They looked at me, wide-eyed, and asked, “Really? But how are you going to take care of them all?” I just smiled and replied, “One dog at a time. If we all do a little bit, then wouldn’t there be more love in the world?”

And so, I visited a shelter near my home. The place wasn’t much to look at—just a large yard, a few old wooden kennels, and dogs wandering around. They weren’t as lively as the younger dogs, no longer running and playing. Their steps were slow, and sometimes, they’d stop and look at me, as if waiting for a promise.

I saw dogs, many of them over 10 years old, standing there in silence. They looked at me with eyes full of longing, and I couldn’t walk away. I started to learn how I could help them. Little by little, day by day, I began adopting these older dogs, bringing them into a small house where they no longer had to fear being abandoned. At first, they were so frightened—some didn’t even want to come close to me. But I was patient, spending time every day to gently pet them and show them safety and love. Over time, they began to trust me.

Now, I don’t just have a house—I have a family. A family of four-legged friends that I call my “loved ones.” Together, we share peaceful moments in life. Every morning, I wake up to see the older dogs sitting around me, looking up with eyes filled with love. They are no longer afraid, and I realize that what I’ve done has not only saved them but saved me as well. These dogs have brought a peace I never knew I needed.

Remember, every dog, every creature deserves a second chance at life. Sometimes, all they need is a heart that knows how to love.
